Celebrate Ohav Shalom's Greenness!Kiddush for the Earth-Zero Waste Shabbat Experience
Are you pleased to find Ohav’s weekly kiddush to be healthier and less wasteful? Happy to learn about how we’re cutting the energy costs of our aging building? Are you excited to learn of Ohav’s acceptance to the Hazon Seal of Sustainability program as we advocate for clean energy in our community?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, then considering joining the team.
As we began the process of “greening” our shul, it felt overwhelming. Rather than attempt to simply navigate the steps independently, the Shomrei Adama team met to discuss how to prioritize those steps and set up some very tangible, realistic goals. We’ve started with education and a commitment. That commitment involves a Zero Waste Station for our kiddushim.
We’ve partnered with FoodScraps360 who manages and shares their compost with local farmers. In our very first Zero Waste Shabbat experience, June 9th, we were able to divert 170 lbs of waste from the landfill. The average individual who follows these procedures in their home is able to divert 230 lbs annually, just think of what a tremendous outcome we’re working towards!
As FoodScraps360 shares with local farmers, it is imperative that we provide them with a pristine compost stream. In order to do that, we need your help. Please consider signing up for a Shabbat or two or even more if you’d like, to assist with working at the zero waste station. Lending a hand to keep an eye on what materials go into which containers will not only connect you with our Ohav community but will bring you such joy to be a part of this incredible Mitzvah, caring for our earth.
